The Jam Stand

I finally have a small (very small) bit of free time and thought I'd post one of my newest projects. My wonderful neighbor, who makes and sells the most delicious caramels (Herbin' Spoonful), introduced me to the lovely Jam Stand ladies. So for the last month we have been hard at work on some new and improved labels for their delicious jams (I recommend Razzy Gabby). You can check out their website The Jam Stand, which I will hopefully be redesigning in the near future. Hope everyone is excited to get jam for Christmas, because that's probably what you will be getting.

It's more beer time. La Saison des Cigals is gone, we have maybe 4-7 beers of Sassy Malt Whitman left, and another one should be ready in a week or so. YAY!

Nick and I are now on our 4th batch of beer. It's bottled and hanging out in our fridge for another week, just in time for my birthday. Before I get ahead of myself, I thought I would post some photos of beer #3 and a recap of beer #2(no pun intended).

Announcing... my new baby brother: Colton Scott Baker! Here are a few cards that I made up for my mom. Isn't he the cutest?!

This one is just a photo with all the info printed on top. It is the easier option.

This card and the next one have slots for the picture to be attached so that different photos can be sent out. It'd require cutting out cards and the slots, along with a special size envelope. It's a bit more tricky and I don't know that the new mother will be up for it.

Nick received a beer kit for Christmas and we are now brewing our third beer. The first beer was your average closet IPA. No special ingredients were added. We expected it to be a dud, as we have read that the first batch usually is. It actually turned out amazingly delicious.

Beer #2 is what I'm really here to talk about though. We call it "6 Inchiladas". It's a spicy honey brew with dry ancho chilies and fresh roasted poblano peppers.

Closet brewed, capped and designed all in our little New York apartment. Remind me where my time goes again...

New Fabric

Today I spent the afternoon trying to find my way through the fabric store Mood, made famous by Project Runway. Let me tell you, I have no idea how those designer find anything in the allotted time because it's HUGE. After several minutes of looking around, I decided that this was not the place to find some new quilting fabric. But wait, the other day I came across a blog post about a cute little fabric store in SoHo. A hop, skip, and subway ride later, I find myself at none other than Purl. As I walk in, the clouds open up, light shines through, heavenly music plays, rainbows of color appear, and I find the most amazing fabric/yarn store EVER. I'm already excited about my next trip.

I think my new phrase will be "Thank you, Purl" for the great help finding beautiful fabrics.

The fabrics I chose are for a baby blanket that I'm quilting for my future baby brother. I hope he likes it!

I've been wanting to try my luck with acrylics again. Last time I painted with them was about 3-4 years ago. Here is painting #1 and what better subject matter to start with than an apple, picked up last saturday at the Fort Green farmers' market. MMMmmmm and now I have a delicious apple to eat.

Today is that magical day of the year where my mom turns the same age as the year before... 42. I don't know why but I have forever placed my mom at the age of 42. I think she is okay with that. I recently made some updates to Nick's website. He now has 2 separate image galleries divided into photography and printmaking, an artist statement page, and a link to his blog. Nick needs to decide on some photos for the photography section, so eventually there will be more photos up. Still worthy of checking out. As for my website... I'm working on yet another design. We'll see how far this one goes before it too gets kicked to the curb. Here is a sketch in the meantime.

Website thoughts: I'm undecided if I want the main page to be that center sketch (In the red-ish box) making the website flash based, OR if I would make that more of a splash page. Hmmmm... I'll keep thinking about it.

So even though this isn't officially a cake, it is part of my cake series. MMM... Macaroons! I bought these from one of my favorite patisseries. The man that owns the patisserie is soooo so nice. Even though they were closing down, he allowed me to go in and buy something. Those who aren't familiar with France, this is practically unheard of. Most places close down early and if you didn't make it in time... well too bad. Every time I go to this place though, he always gives me something extra than what I ordered. This time it was an extra macaroon. DELICIOUS!

While I know I'm not the greatest artist that has walked this planet, Marc Chagall gives me hope in just the first few pages of his book when he says "I remember my unsuccessful drawing and think: Will I be a great artist?" Definitely thoughts that I think. Maybe one day.

A little something I've been working on in my printmaking class. I have a new print that I will take photos of tomorrow and on Friday I will be experimenting with some different colors. These are the first few stages of the print.

I must admit, It wasn't the best tasting cake that I have had. It was a passion fruit cake, and I don't know how I feel about passion fruit. On the plus side... it's yellow!

Pear Trio

The middle one might not look like a pear... but it is! I'm really excited to eat it and was also excited to gouache it. Or it could be that 5 straight days of sunshine is going to my head. I don't know. I tried to take photos of some of the steps but it's way to dark in my house at night so the photos didn't turn out very good. Here are a couple anyway!

I've realized that my gouaches have not been very French inspired. I can, after all, gouache fruit and vegetables anywhere in the world. After thinking for awhile on how to incoorporate my French lifestyle, I decided what better way than to gouache the amazingly delicious cakes at the patisserie. This will also justify buying and eating one once a week! Mmm. This first cake is a slice of the cassis (currant) gâteau that I purchased for my valentine's party. Not my best work, even more reason to practice/eat more cakes!

Pear

So, I think pears are my new favorite fruit (after grapefruit). I can't stop eating them! mmm.. I'm also on my second post in one day. Hopefully this makes up for my last week of silence. Nick and I leave on Saturday for Tours/Orleans, some small town, and Paris. His goal for the break has been to complete a drawing/gouache for everyday of the break which would also fill up his current sketchbook. Somehow he also decided this is my goal for the break. So far I have completed 3 gouaches, my v-day card, and about 3 sketches. Get excited! It should all be up on my blog soon.
